Oc|tan [↑ Oct- u. ↑ -an (1)], das; -s; veraltetes Syn.: n-Octan: H3C—(CH2)6—CH3; farblose, leicht entflammbare Fl., Sdp. 126 °C, die haupts. als Lsgm. u. Extraktionsmittel benutzt wird. Zur Bestimmung der ↑ Octanzahl dient ↑ Isooctan, eines der 17 verzweigtkettigen Isomeren (Octane).
